Dreams 2006

The theater festival Dreams 2006 was held for the first time in Akureyri the 10th to the 16th of July and was a success.  The shows were all very well attended and received critical acclaim from the audience, who were mostly guests of the Nordic Culture Festival which was held at the same time and place.

We would hereby like to thank the theaters that participated in our first theater festival which will live in our memories for a long time.  They are the following:

IVT from France, Tyst Teater from Sweden, RobRoyShow from Australia, Ramesh Meyyappan from Sinagpore, Handtheater from the Netherlands and Mo-Theatre from the USA.

Additionally we'd like to thank the following sponsors, without whom the festival would not have been as big as it was.  They are the following:

Norden, the Ministry of Culture, the town of Akureyri, Glitnir, the Deaf Society, Icelandair, the American Embassy in Iceland, the Icelandic Embassy in France, Norðurmjólk, Vífilfell, Listasumar and Actavis.

Special thanks go to LA (Leikfélag Akureyrar) for the cooperation and for allowing us to use the theater The Space for Dreams 2006.

The next festival will be held in 2008, we will accept applications at the email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  Application deadline for participation in Dreams 2008 is the 1st of November 2007.  More information about Dreams 2008 will be posted shortly.

Critique

CritiqueThe premier went very well and all the critique from the press was very favorable, here are a few examples.

"Beautiful performance in an all-Icelandic surroundings" - Elísabet Brekkan, DV.

"This is performance that moves you deeply without becoming mushy or preachy.  It should be mandatory for all children in elementary schools to see it so they'll understand right away that hearing and deaf people do not live in two separate worlds, but side by side in one and the same world.  Good work." - Súsanna Svavarsdóttir, Fréttablaðið.

"[...]how come all children aren't taught sign language right away in kindergarden?  How can we, this small nation, show the deaf such lack of interest and attention?" - María Kristjánsdóttir, Morgunblaðið.

We are very proud :)  Do come and see our play in the Theater of Hafnarfjörður, you can order tickets at www.midi.is or contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

"The Interview"

Rehersals for "the Interview" are going well and the premier will be on the 4th of March so we are so to speak on the last meters these days.  Apart from the premier we will have performances on the 5th, 11th and 12th of March and all are close to sold out.  Tickets can be ordered from the Theater of Hafnarfjordur or by email, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The homepage will be updated soon with additions such as a picture album and pages with information about the theater festival which will be in Akureyri next summer.

Nordic deaf theater education conference

DenmarkThe conference was held in the Odsherred theater school which is about one and a half hour away from Copenhagen.  The theater school was once a hospital but was changed to a theater school which includes gymnastic halls, theater and a stage with seats for 300 people, cafeteria and numerous sleeping rooms in a very beautiful country setting.  A perfect place for a theater school for the deaf.

This conference was just the beginning of founding a theater school for the deaf living in the nordic countries and the purpose was to find out how that school should function and what should be taught in it.
All the conference guests agreed that it was long overdue because education of this kind just doesn't exist in the nordic countries.  It was decided that the goal should be for the school should open the fall 2006 and to offer education on level with other theater schools.  The studies would be party remote and partly on site, the students would go home to their respective countries and studie the theater history of their own countries and sign language studies in their own laguage.  Part of the studies would be remote with a teacher online, along with going regularly back to the school for rehersals, dancing lessons and theater education.

It was a great honor to be able to participate in planning the construction of the school to be able to suit as many as possible, to be allowd to shape the idea and foundation of the school itself.  Now we just have to wait for news of how things are progressing.

The first international Deaf theater festival in Iceland

The Dream Workshop is preparing the first international Deaf theater festival in Iceland which will be held alongside the Deaf Nordic Culture festival in Akureyri the 10th to the 16th of July 2006.  A number of theaters have already announced their participation and we expect everyone to find something to their liking.

The DreamWorkshop goes to a conference in Denmark

The DreamWorkshop was recently invited to attend to a conference in Denmark the 8th and 9th of October regarding theatrical education for the deaf, but theatrical education for the deaf living in the nordic countries is very limited.

We expect this to be a very interesting and informative conference.  More to follow when we return back.
